Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

We support every patient wanting to take pride in their appearance and a simple way of doing this is with teeth whitening. The external layer of your tooth is made of enamel and it is the strongest substance in your body. Although strong, it can be stained by foreign material such as tea, coffee, red wine, certain foods and cigarette smoke. If these foreign materials are left on your teeth for too long they cause staining which penetrates deep into the natural imperfections of the enamel surface. In conjunction with a good clean, teeth whitening is effective at removing these deeper stains. Admire Dentistry offers In-Chair Whitening in conjunction with Take Home Kits. It is important to note that whitening will enhance only natural tooth structure, fillings, veneers and crowns cannot change colour. If you are interested in a whiter and brighter smile please ask our friendly dentists for more information.

Our Frequently Asked Questions

Is teeth whitening covered by private insurance?

Yes, depending on your level of coverage, your private insurance should cover some of your treatment. Admire Dentistry accepts all health funds and offers payment plans to help manage the costs. These days, we find most health funds pay very well for teeth whitening. If you’re thinking of teeth whitening, please contact our friendly staff at any time, and we can schedule a time for your consultation.

How often should I do teeth whitening?

The frequency of teeth whitening depends on the method used and your oral habits. Professional in-office treatments might require touch-ups every 6 to 12 months. At-home kits are typically used once a day for 14 days initially and then occasionally for maintenance. A mix of both can ensure the effects of the in-office whitening last a lot longer. However, overdoing it can lead to sensitivity. Please consult with your dentist at Admire Dentistry for personalised guidance.

Are teeth whitening suitable for everyone?

Unfortunately, teeth whitening isn’t suitable for everyone. Our oral health therapists at Admire Dentistry take their time during your initial assessment to ensure this is the right treatment for you. While teeth whitening is safe, it might not be suitable for everyone in that you might not achieve the results you are looking for. Depending on what type of whitening you are looking for, veneers might be a better option for you. Alternatively, if staining is the concern, then an Airflow clean can achieve the desired effect.

Individuals with gum disease, tooth sensitivity, extensive dental restorations, or certain dental conditions might need to avoid whitening. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult with our dentist. A professional consultation will determine if teeth whitening is appropriate for you.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

Teeth whitening results are not permanent, but they can last a significant amount of time. The longevity depends on factors like your oral hygiene habits, dietary choices (consumption of coloured and staining foods & drinks), and lifestyle (such as smoking). Touch-up treatments might be needed every 6 to 12 months to maintain the desired level of whiteness.

Can I drink coffee/tea after teeth whitening?

After teeth whitening, it’s best to avoid dark-coloured beverages like coffee, tea and red wine for at least 24 to 48 hours. During this time, your teeth are more susceptible to staining. After the initial period, it is good to continue to be mindful of what staining food and drink you consume. Bolognese and curries can also stain teeth, even after the initial 48-hour period. Maintaining good oral hygiene and moderation with staining foods can help preserve your whitening results. Quitting smoking is also strongly recommended.

How can I retain my white teeth?

Maintain oral hygiene, limit staining foods/drinks, use a straw for staining beverages, rinse or brush after consuming, quit smoking and vaping, and attend regular dental check-ups. Whitening and charcoal toothpaste do not help; they are extremely abrasive and can actually brush away your natural enamel. Enamel is what we whiten during your treatment. No enamel = no whitening. Avoid smoking and stay hydrated. Consistency in care and mindful choices preserve your white smile’s vibrancy.
