Children’s Dentistry

At Admire Dentistry, we’re passionate about helping children build healthy smiles that last a lifetime. Our team provides gentle, supportive care designed to make dental visits positive and stress-free for kids and parents alike.

Management of anxious children through patience and use of Nitrous oxide if needed

We know that dental visits can feel overwhelming for little ones. Our approach is always calm, reassuring, and paced to suit each child. When extra support is needed, nitrous oxide (commonly known as “happy gas”) is available to help children feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a colourless and odourless inorganic gas combined with oxygen. The gas is used to mange pain and anxiety during dental treatment. With correct use it starts working within one minute of inhaling it, and the effects wear off quickly after the gas is removed.

Fissure seals

Fissure sealants are needed primarily in the newly erupted adult molars. Your child’s number 6 teeth are sealed when they erupt at approximately age 6, and your child’s number 7 teeth are sealed when they erupt at approximately age 12. When these new adult teeth erupt, they typically have deep and narrow grooves on their chewing surfaces. These grooves can be so narrow that even a toothbrush bristle can struggle to get in and clean them well. Despite you and your child’s best efforts in cleaning, these grooves catch and hold the food debris. Unfortunately, when these grooves hold food it causes the tooth to decay easily. Placing a fissure sealant is an affordable and simple way to protect your children’s teeth, both baby or adult teeth, by keeping food particles from wedging into the small narrow grooves of natural teeth and causing decay.

This procedure does not destroy or remove any tooth structure, and is suitable for use in children, adolescents, and adults. The procedure is quick, comfortable, and well tolerated by children.

Once placed, your dentist will check them at regular dental appointments to ensure they are in place and topped up if needed. A sealant can typically last for up to six years, however they can wear away sooner than this. Possible reasons for the early loss of a fissure sealant can be tooth wear, decay, or tooth loss. If you lose a fissure sealant early your dentist will identify this, and the cause will need to be investigated further.

First checkups & Maintenance

Early visits help children get used to the dental environment and allow us to detect concerns before they become bigger problems. We make first checkups gentle, fun, and stress-free, setting the stage for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.
Routine visits are important for keeping teeth and gums healthy. Regular cleans remove plaque and tartar, while checkups give us the chance to catch problems early and reinforce good oral hygiene habits.

An Oral Health Therapist provides comprehensive care to ensure your child’s oral health is well maintained. While providing routine cleans (removal of plaque and calculus) is a significant part of an OHT’s role, they also can help with treatments such as fluoride application, dental fissure sealants, restorative dental treatment, dental scans, images and impressions.

Patient education is a vital part of maintaining your oral health and our OHT will share valuable tips to ensure that your oral health is always optimal.

Stainless steel crowns

Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are a reliable and effective way to protect children’s baby teeth when they have been badly affected by decay or damage. These pre-formed metal caps cover the whole tooth, restoring strength and function so your child can continue to eat and smile with confidence. They are designed to last until the baby tooth naturally falls out.

Why are stainless steel crowns used?

• Protection for damaged teeth – They provide full coverage for teeth with extensive decay, developmental defects, or trauma.
• An alternative to extraction – By saving the tooth, they prevent early tooth loss which can cause spacing issues and affect the eruption of adult teeth.
• Strong and long-lasting – Stainless steel crowns are highly durable and can withstand chewing forces, especially on back teeth, making them one of the most successful restorative options for primary teeth.

When are stainless steel crowns recommended?

• For teeth with large cavities (dental caries)
• Teeth with enamel defects or developmental issues
• Severe wear of the tooth surface
• Following pulp therapy (treatment for an infected baby tooth)
• When a cavity involves multiple surfaces of a tooth

Stainless steel crowns are considered the most dependable way to protect and preserve baby teeth until they are ready to fall out naturally, supporting healthy growth and development of your child’s smile.

Silver fluoride

Silver fluoride (often called silver diamine fluoride or SDF) is a safe, minimally invasive treatment used to slow or stop tooth decay in children’s teeth. It’s quick to apply and can help protect teeth that may not yet be ready for fillings or more complex treatment.

Why use silver fluoride?

• Stops decay in its tracks – It prevents existing cavities from getting worse.
• Minimally invasive – No drilling is needed, making it a gentle option for anxious or very young children.
• Protects teeth until further treatment – It buys time for teeth that may need fillings or crowns later.

When is silver fluoride recommended?

• Early cavities that are small but could worsen
• Children who are anxious or have difficulty sitting through dental treatment
• Teeth with decay that are at risk of further damage before they can be restored

Silver fluoride is an effective way to preserve baby teeth, helping your child maintain healthy teeth and a confident smile while avoiding more extensive procedures where possible.

Extractions using our Wand system

That’s right – no syringes here! Our Wand system delivers local anaesthetic gently and precisely, making extractions far less intimidating and more comfortable for children.

The wand is the alternative to a syringe injection. It is a computer-controlled injection for local anaesthetic. The simple and elegant design makes the appearance far less confronting, which is great for children and patients with dental and needle phobia. The deep stinging pain patients feel when receiving an injection is often caused by the anaesthetic being injected too quickly. The Wand guarantees a slow and steady injection which will increase your level of comfort and eliminate the pain factor.

Space maintainers

Space maintainers are small dental devices used to keep the gap open when a baby tooth is lost too early. They make sure there’s enough room for the permanent tooth to come through correctly, helping prevent crowding or alignment problems later on.

Why use a space maintainer?

• Maintain proper spacing – Prevents surrounding teeth from moving into the empty space.
• Support healthy development – Ensures adult teeth can erupt in the correct position.
• Reduce future orthodontic issues – Helps avoid more complicated dental work later on.

When are space maintainers recommended?

• Premature loss of baby teeth due to decay, trauma, or extraction
• When multiple teeth are missing and gaps need to be preserved

Space maintainers are a simple and effective way to protect your child’s smile and support healthy dental development.

Second opinions / treatment plan discussion

We welcome families who would like a second opinion or wish to discuss their child’s treatment plan. We’ll explain options clearly and ensure you feel confident about your child’s care.

Our Frequently Asked Questions

Does the implant tooth stay forever?

The implant itself will last a lifetime if looked after correctly, but the crown or tooth that is attached to the implant may need to be periodically changed; talk to our experienced dentists at Admire Dentistry for more information

Is an implant procedure safe?

Implant surgery is a safe procedure. Admire Dentistry aims to ensure your implant procedure and restoration are a pleasant experience.

Are there different types of dental implants available?

Yes, there are lots of different types of implants and implant brands for different indications. Rest assured, at Admire Dentistry, only the best implants and original parts are used.

Does implant suit everyone?

While dental implants are a fantastic solution for many, it’s important to understand that individual circumstances can influence their suitability. Having good bone density and healthy gums usually makes the process smoother. Even if there’s a challenge, advancements in dental technology often offer solutions, like bone grafts. Health conditions or lifestyle choices, such as smoking, may require special attention. Growing children might need to wait, but for many adults, implants can be a life-changing choice. Talk to our our experienced dentists to see whether a dental implant suits you.

What if I don’t get a dental implant?

We understand that implants sometimes can be costly. To reduce your financial burden, you can have dentures or bridges as alternatives. On some occasions, your dentist may recommend a bone graft in order to preserve your bone volume for a future implant should you decide not to proceed with an implant initially. Otherwise, we also offer payment plans like the National Dental Plan (NDP). Talk to our friendly staff at Admire Dentistry to find out more information.
